BBC Sherlock’s Irene Adler is strongly reminiscent of Gabrielle Valladon/Ilse von Hoffmanstal in Billy Wilder’s Private Life. In fact, I think Irene’s character makes much more sense if you view her as an adaptation of Hoffmanstal rather than as an adaptation of the original Irene Adler. Ilse plays the game with Sherlock, and ultimately they come to a draw.

Mark Gatiss has cited The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes as a major inspiration for him. I will be making more posts about other parallels between Private Life and BBC Sherlock, but I wanted to focus the first on Ilse & Irene.

I love the way Martin stiffens his legs and sticks his feet out to the side.  Subtle things like that are what make him such a great comic actor.
